User-Contributed Transcription Feb 10th 8th 1840Dear MotherI write the following about a week since, but hurry bc. has prevented my finishing the thing, - it can hardly be called a letter. I expect I took this old sheet about as much from laziness as anything. Too lazy to write a good letter, on a good sheet, with a good pen. So I took this to scribble on.Is it not queer neater this winter, the snow is most all gone here, I guess Charles will not make out much, this winter, the weather, - be, have been such. Had had better have kept school. Mr. Walker is going to look up housekeeping, for a time and by, but not right away, perhaps in March what I do then? Hope to get another place, or go home? I don't hardly know whether I had better stay here and go to school this summer, (even if I can) or go to work, on the farm, or something. I believe I have not changed my mind up about NOT going to college. If I should go, I never should make anything. (line drawn)Eliab must learn just as much as his situations permits, this does he have the mood to saw? He don't have many calls to take care of when Charles is not there with the Horses - I wish I had him in my study, here some of these good long evenings, I would make him learn. I know he must study evenings, much better than to go to singing schools!!I get along some in my studies in Latin, Greek, but not very fast. I find I have filled my sheet, such as it is, after a fashion, but I don't see as I have written much of any thing. Do, take time and write me a good long letter, I want to know how things get along etc.I.S Metcalf
