User-Contributed Transcription Northfield Sept 2d. 1848Dear Mother,I was hoping somewhat to hear from some of you by last night's mail, but perhaps you did not get down East in Season, and perhaps if you did you would all be too glad to get home to think of writing to me. So perhaps I better not expect a letter for a month or so. It is rather curious how defective some of your children are in the art of speech. Some people now can always say just what they wish to, at just the right time. Perhaps it is partly some defect in the brain which does not think of thinks at the right time to say them. Since you went away I keep thinking of things that I really wanted to say, and talk about, to you, & to Lucy, and the rest of you. I began to believe it will not do for me to depend much upon the faculty of speech, as a medium for thoughts; if ever do think of anything I must put it on paper. One think I intended to mention to you, that I wish you would speak to Charles about when you get to Milo. You know it has been always allowed that Charles on the place there somehow owed me something. Charles himself said three of four years go that he was going to pay me $100.00 and it was certainly justly my due. I have done more than that worth of hard work these some of it too hard, since I was twenty or twenty one years old. Besides the money that I earned away from home before I went to College more then I ever had any benefit from myself. The fact is I ought to have had those earnings. There was property an
