User-Contributed Transcription Goffstown July 16th 1849Dear Mother, I believe I have not yet answered your excellent letter of June 26. Seems to me if you only knew how much good your letters do you would write oftener. As for my coming home, the matter is uncertain. Still I do mean to get away if possible in August. I worked so well along in the Spring that I do not have to be so much hurried now a days. I can get along pretty easy, considerable care, but not a great deal to do at present except Office Work, and riding about to give directions and see that they are done right in all respects. I can not get away now on account of some Masonry which require constant looking after to have it done right. If I get that fixed up right after the First of August Work is done up, if nothing else comes up which is probably, perhaps I can get away for a week. As for Joseph, I think he reads writes & thinks too much. Why can he not be contented to simply enjoy life without vexing his brain for any thing just for one season Load round, ride about and lie in the sun not read & write all the time. It is a great pity he could not come. I would have taken care of him good. The Weather here has been extremely hot, and very dry ground all parched up. Hay only half a crop. Corn very backward for cold weather in June now looks as black, as you please, & grows like every thing
