User-Contributed Transcription against YV, overbearing aristocracy of money, & good fellowism, and genteel disposition, is, in a great measure, to be fought this year. But there are strong fellows to fight it. The whole torrent this spring has been to 'put down' , to run it by any means no matter how, private & public, individual & general; open & concealed, malice & scorn, lies & sneers. - but all originated in fear. But all will not do: truth must prevail. The yearly Class Election of Orator & Poet in the Sophomore Class took place last Friday. The candidates for Orator were the Stevens, the big gun of the Class, the great man of and my good friend & Brother Case of Levant. It was hard contested and great excitement. One would think the very existence of depended upon Stevens election. Even the Seniors interested themselves in it, electioneered for them. On our side, the Sophomores worked it out for themselves, in all ?houses? Case was Elected. 18 to 17 One majority. It was justly considered a victory, little to be sure, but a beginning. It is secretly called an omen that Metcalf will be next President of the Athenaean Society! The defeat did not set very well upon the . They made a terrible outcry, in their anger brought a raving charge of Lying etc. against a . He defended himself calmly, and with so much true courage that they could not get him to fight, and finally they were obliged to take back and apologize! It was rich. They over did themselves. I would write to Uncle Joseph, if I knew how. How I should like to go to Mass. Probably I shall not go to 'Oregon', if the Mormons do, at least till they die off. As for the Doctor project I was in earnest then, though in truth, I am so busy since, I do not think about it. As for Uncle Natty, I will do nothing but let him alone, & pray you too.
