User-Contributed Transcription Foxcroft March 3rd 1844, SundayDearest MotherMy roommate's beau came this morning and staid so long that I could not get ready in season to go to meeting; so I will sped a part of the forenoon in writing to you, although I do not in all cases approve of writing letters Sunday. Joseph cam up with me last Monday, went to Dexter Tuesday to try to find a chance to work, but did not succeed.to go to school. Isaac & I board together at the Butlers;-not more than three or four roads from the Academy. We boarded vis. Miss Kent from Sebec Isaac & myself have a comfortable, pretty little parlour (with an airtight stove, rocking settee) and two bedrooms leading from it. My room has a fire in it. The price of board is 8/ with washing alone, or 7/6 and do my own washing. I think I shall do my own & Isaac's too. Miss Caverno is very amiable, pleasant, handsome, agreeable, pretty too. I like it a great deal better being in a room by ourselves, (we girls) but we have to go down below to write, which is grievous. I study Algebra (and if you will believe it, get along nicely therin too; - I was behind most of the class when I came, but am now ahead all the girls) Upham's Mental Philosophy, Arithmetic & Grammar. Oh dear, how I do have to "manipulate" on the board in Algebra & Arithmetic. Isaac has the Algebra, Mr Tash Arithmetic & Miss C, Upham. If it is a possible thing I shall get excused from going to the board, for I am so abominable silly that it takes my strength "entirely away"[top of page upside down] This is universally acknowledged to be a very hard school. If she teaches any where about here, the school and Milo Mills will be a good one on account of high wages and tractable scholars.
