User-Contributed Transcription Topsham, Jan 17th 1845Dear MotherI received your last welcome letter last week, several days since; and was as usual very much gratified with it. The news too was exactly what I wanted to hear, andnot as you suggested, what I had heard before from any of the Bangor "brethren."It is now some little time since I have heard from Bangor at all, and when they do write, they write very little news most of them.Joseph is a very good prompt correspondent, and his letters are always really valuable ones, but they are always filled with all sorts ofPhilosophy, scientific & metaphysic speculation and disquisition, interspersed with his peculiar dryness of satire, but usually very studiouslyrefraining from all fact & news.Eliab hardly writes at all. I really wish he would, I want much to be better acquainted with him.Lucy has written to me once since she has been in Bangor. Anne wrote me @ beautiful letter as , and indeed containing @ New Year's gift.
