User-Contributed Transcription Mr Gough was on board & gave us a speech down the bay.He lectured here Wed.Eve. We arrived at Portland at dark, two hours late for the extreme sea roughness.Had to pay, 163 for carrying my trunks to a tavern, & ,25 for my lodging alone. Supper & breakfast both, 12 1/2. Got to Brunswick inthe stage for $1,00, which was better than to walk, as I probably could not get the trunks carried for 50 It is perhaps a bad thing for Clark that I did not come the week before as I intended. He concluded I should not come, and cared he could not get another room mate which would double his bills of rent, fuel, lights. The day before I came, when he had about given up seeing me; book, one of last spring term associates, came & wanted to go in with him (Clark is popular) and would buy some nicer furniture. Under the circumstances, I thought not best to interrupt them though they both offered to. Cook is rather a Rowdy acquired considerable reputation in the "Bagger war??" last spring by "knocking down" a "Bagger" in the street, & day time for which however he was 'Suspended' a while.I do not think his influence beneficial upon Clark, who is one of those characters who take their stamp from the company they keep in a great degree.I had however several other chances offered me. Among the rest, a certain Senior, James Newton by name wanted I should come in with him for this term, as his chum is absent. It would save him half of fuel & lights. It was a pretty good as his room is well furnished; but it would be going out of my class, which is unpleasant, & I must find a new room mate. Set up for myself in the spring, which would be more difficult. His object was said to be to make
