User-Contributed Transcription Goffstown Jan. 7 1850 Brother Samuel I enclose to you a letter to my Mother, who is probably at your house before this time. At least she wrote of going there last week. What do you think of Howell Colb as Speaker of the House? Do you, like some in these parts, try to throw the blame upon the 'FreeSoilers' instead of where it rightly & really belongs, upon the 'Whig Party"? However isn't that same Whig Party in rather 'bad sledding' this Winter? What can they do? I look with the most hope for this Winter to old Benton. He is now the most prominent man in the country. He unites great powers of mind with a greater portion of Common Sense than most men. He takes wider views of things than most politicians That Senate Chamber is to be a mighty Battle Field this Winter; a glorious one too I hope, if Henry Clay does not creep on with some miserable paltry "compromise" or other. It does seem as if Clay were old enough & should be wise enough, to look farther ahead than one session of Congress. It is strange that with his splendid abilities, he can never comprehend that another generation is to succeed this. How different from Benton, or Webster, if Webster only had moral courage enough to be governed by his own foresight. But I am afraid this kind of politics will not interest you. Write to me. I.S.M.
