User-Contributed Transcription Ducoign, Perry Co. ILL. Sept. 24. 1854 Dear Sister Anne Your letter of the 15th inst. to Charles was received last night. We were both very glad to hear from you. I had been a long time expecting a letter from you: and really ought to have written myself long before, whether I heard from you or not. But really I have been very much pressed with business this Summer. I have written letters only in direct answer to those I have received; and have done little else except just as I was absolutely obliged to do it. You know it has been exceptionally hot everywhere. here still More so. For three full months here there was no rain, and hardly a single day in the whole time when the thermometer was not above 90 [degrees] F. in the coolest places to be found. And at one time three weeks when it did not fall below 80 [degrees] F. at any time. I could imagine nothing like the drouth except perhaps in Sahara, or perhaps on the Pampas of L.A. The Atmosphere night as well as day seemed perfectly dry. For a whole month there was not a particle of dew even. The drough has been very extensive and very bad all over the Country; but I have
