User-Contributed Transcription Orono Me. March 17th, 1847 Dear Mother, I do not know whether you have heard of my recent whereabouts, or whether this letter may take you entirely by surprise. However, Here I am, at Orono, or as I suppose it is more frequently called Lower Stillwater, about seven miles from Bangor, comfortably established, boarding at what is called a "werry nice place", at Dr. Ricker's, and teaching a great "High School." High School, both as being Up Stairs, and as having a high teacher, just from old Bowdoin, and an abundance of high scholars, or those who I suppose think themselves such. I decided to come here last Friday March 12th, just before noon, started at 6 six P.M. by stage, at Portland Augusta, at 12 P.M. till 9 A.M. Saturday. By Mail Stage to Bangor, where I arrived at 8 1/2 P.M. and remained until 4 P.M. Monday March 15th. I can assure you, or you can well imagine that I wanted to go up to Milo dreadfully, but could in no manner attain to it, as I was already one day behind my time, and if I remained even a single day longer, should probably have lost the whole concern of my school.
