User-Contributed Transcription Do you ask what the preventing circumstances are? It is easy to name some of them. One, enough in itself, losing one whole year of the College course. for being absent, is, for all discipline and real benefit, the same as full loss. Second, being absent from College one third at least of of the remainder of the course. One may study out or 'make it up' as it is called. They can easily do it so as to keep along with their class, but as a general thing, they lose it all, after all. Moreover, there is no denying it, a person's name and station does make a difference, not so much with students, they are not old enough, not trained in this world's ways enough, to judge so, but with higher powers. A 'novus homo', as we should say in latin, new man, that is one from an unknown family, without a shadow of the claim, (it is, must be, a claim in this world,) which is bestowed by wealth, influence, power, name of family, friends, connecting, cannot expect to get along so easy. Whatever he gets in this world, he must get with a strong hand of his own; where ever he gets, he must get by hard crowding himself there. The world is against him.The College powers must go on these same principles they must do as the world do, they are dependent on that world. It is the support of that wealth, influence, and family which supports them. they must consider this thing. I do not know but it is their duty to, At any rate they do
