User-Contributed Transcription So they say that I have done unusually well in the school up in numbers so well and so long, and yet I have lost just about one half of the young men who began to attend. One thing is flattering however, that not a single one of the young ladies has left except one who is sick. So I have only about 35 or 36 scholars for the last part of the time. I ought to have been informed of the matter beforehand, but if I had I probably should not have come, I was somewhat inclined to be a bit provoked at the man who wrote to me, and who knew all about it. that he did not state the case fairly, and when I found the scholars learning so to quit after the six weeks. But the school that is left seemed to be getting so finely, to feel so bad about the school closing any time soon, that I though I would stay, if I did not get quite so large wages as I expected. You wish Eliab would be more serious. Why? He is, I presume, perfectly steady! and if he enjoys himself highly, in his way, so much the better, is it not? He is certainly a merry fine young man, successful, much liked by his employees; liked by all who know him and that is not a few, as a young man of good abilities & and high promise. What more do you want?
