User-Contributed Transcription 5Uncle Joseph is improving much his little rocky pinched up half bit of a farm. Uses lots of Bog Mud & Ashes, clearing of swamp, holes & everything. Makes it profitable to Power? full of hay. I should think more than in Uncle Conant's tho. Hires a Man and a boy. Uncle Joseph appears to be a very popular man; and is really a very capable business man, for one of his "Eddication." very well informed. I judge the whole set take them together, here and at Northfield, a very happy family. Wednesday was a rainy day, and Thursday Morn. Wed. P.M. Came a Mr. Lewis (and wife and daughter) whose son Lenas is Uncle Joseph's hired man from Winchester. Mrs. Lewis, who used to be "Bing" or "Viny" or "Livy" Conant, much pleased to know who I was, inquired much after all the folks, sent much love. As by the way do every body many else. All which I do herely deliver. Appears quite a woman just about Charles' age, rather got the start of him thought, I judge by her stout Whiskered son, and the daughter her Her Mother (or somebody else) living near here, is sick and like to die; Consumption, I guess. I enquired of her for Josiah K. Metcalf of Royalston said to be teaching School at Winchester. Was so good, and much liked; but then just gone home to attend the funeral of his mother, or rather Step Mother. Next day. Thurs rainy morning, clearer P.M. Funeral of a young man - Abbott, 23 years old. Student, I believe just died of Consumption. Several deaths likely, among Mr. Hodges, of whose Children Unclear is guardian.
