User-Contributed Transcription to Manchester by the Evening Train, and spent the Sabbath there. I never liked Manchester very well, and really much as I have been there, never spent a Sabbath there before. I was however better pleased there yesterday. Rev. Dr. Wallace, of the First Cong. Church I liked very much. He is really a large man - put me in mind once or twice, especially in the evening, when I heard him lecture on Temperance, of Wendell Phillips. Did you ever see or hear Wendell Phillips? Wendell Phillips is among the most eloquent men in this or any country - would be so considered of all men if it were not for the extremity of some of his opinions. How long I shall stay here, or what I shall so is extremely uncertain. I shall be Down East as soon as possible. At any rate I want you to write to me direct Manchester N.H. Samuel, among the troubles on the N.H. Central, Money is still scarce. I have not yet succeeded in getting enough to pay off all the men I have discharged. I do just get enough for myself to pay my expenses as I go along from week to week and those are considerable some of the time. Board $1.00 per day, to say nothing of "Brandy Segars"! But - money is promised me in a few days. If I get a supply, I will try to send you another hundred, if you want it, pretty soon. Perhaps I may be down there myself in a week or two. Yours Affectionately I.S.M.
