User-Contributed Transcription And yet how full of Want & Misery, and Wretchedness, and poverty and suffering. - and worse than all, of Crime. how many thousand Gambling Saloons, gorgeous as palaces, but well called Hells. I do not know but a hundred thousand drinking places, from the filthiest of Irish Rum holes to the most splendid of gilded and marbled saloons, adorned with paintings and statues, every work of art and skill that can please the taste or tempt the eye. It is enough to set one thinking to walk in the streets here, here perhaps a reeling drunkard, spattered with mud, or with blood from contact with some curbstone or railing; there perhaps a party of miserable half naked emigrants, or of starving and shivering children, may be asleep upon some stone step or cellar grating; and then again crowds of beings beautiful as houris, decked with silks & jewels and brave attire, but whose "house is the way to hell, going down to the Chambers of death." ready to accost any one in the Street and if not replied to perhaps bursting out in horrible cussing and profanity. It is enough to make one disgusted with mere beauty for the rest of his life. I think I shall go to Albany tomorrow, probably to Utica, the next day, and perhaps to Canandaigua the day after, and so on. If I do not get pretty well stopped somewhere before, I may get to Westfield sometime the end of this week, and shall be very happy to find late letters from you there. Especially if Eliab has sent any thing to me since I left and I have not got it, or if he has any thing send, I wish you would write to Westfield this Week. Affectionately I.S.
