User-Contributed Transcription Written sideways at the top:I dont know when I shall return but I expect Anna will go with me unless Isaac or Eliab should have occation to come this way soon. A wont want to go till August or Sept but I guess she will April 5th /56My Dear sonyou wanted to know about the price & rent of farms I will write you what little I can pick up about it - Dr. says small farms under cultivation can be bought for 1 or 2 thousand dollars or from 10 to 50 dollars an acre - unimprov'd for considerably less - more profit in raising sheep & cattle than grain sheep do well here & Ohio would bring a greater price than any other Tho' one man can take care of 20 acres of corn they just run a cultivator thro' it not hoe it at all Many farms in this county give their attention wholly to making cheese keep a great lot of cows the men make the cheese and sell it off every Saturday night put up in boxes of 6 or 7 cents per lb all cash cheeses weighing from 50 to 100 lb Timber - wood is of course growing very valuable but the Dr. buys his wood for 1,50 a load this yearHe says if you were here with 1000, you could make yourself better off in 5 years than you ever could where you are now -- When the snow is all gone & the warm weather comes I expect to ride round the country some for the Dr keeps a very find horse & it is Anna's delight to be out in the air the Dr. dont go out when it is cold unless it is necessary he likes to have a warm room & stay in it - But Anna walks out every day almost cold or storm it makes not much difference says she can't feel lively & invigorated without the outdoor air - We have n't heard anything from Almeda since she went home nor anything from Bangor for more than a month - do write to me soon and often it will benefit you as well as me it is not decided yet but it is possible that Anna will go home with me when I go & stay a few weeks
