User-Contributed Transcription How very thankful we ought to be that you both have been so well. Poor Mr. Rider Lucy has written all about it. It has been a trying scene for all of us. His countenance will be much disfigur'd but that is not the worst The Dr. told Sam'l that it was the worst kind of Caner i.e. in the skin to cure that it would probably break out again & eventually cause his death tis best not to intimate any such thing to them - very trying for Almeda as well as all the rest- by the way, Charles why have you not written to Almeda more? - tho' you have had a good many letters to write & you've done well - but perhaps she has not had her share. Almeda has written to Sally to go take care for her while she is gone from home I suppose Walter will go from our home now they expect you home but George stays I suppose & they'll do well I guess I am sorry that you have been so harrass'd with news from home or for lack of the right news at the right time they have all been getting along well enough all the while if they could only think so May God be with you & keep you both in peace & safety & grant you every comfort till you meet again your Mother[top of letter upside down] I would not write to you when I am here as Lucy can do it all so much better were it not that I hope to get more letters by it.
