User-Contributed Transcription Scrawled on top:MotherJan. 8 57Bangor Jan 8th /57My Dear Son,We receiv'd letters from you last night - which as usual gladen'd our hearts I did indeed get reliev'd when I was sick wonderfully quick - Dr. Paine came here 3 or 4 times & E. went twice to him for medicine &c. between Sunday morning & tuesday night - I don't know but I should have got better if I'd had no other Dr. but I think not near as soon - They didn't feel satisfied & got Dr. McRuen wednesday & thursday I was much reliev'd not withstanding both the Dr. thought as I'm told since that I could live but a short time probably my being so old was the reason of that opinionTho' it was so short a time it took away my strength & flesh - I have a strong inclination you know, perhaps you'll call it pride to take care of myself i.e. not to trouble other people not to be waited upon which came on a long even before I'm aware of it - But I probably got along all the better for itI went down stairs or rather E. carried me in just
