Description Twelve letters of John J. Russell of Sterling, Illinois, documenting his service as a sergeant and 2nd lieutenant in Company B of the 13th Illinois Infantry in Missouri, Mississippi, and Alabama. Russell writes to his brother, Charles, and sister, Julia, from Rolla, Franklin, and Heetsville, Mo., Vicksburg, Miss., Cairo, Ill., and Bridgeport and Madison Station, Ala. One letter (Dec. 6, 1861) is written on stationery containing a printed vignette portrait of McClellan.

Sept. 26 1861.Dear Bro & Sister:Quite unexpectedly to ourselves we are compelled to remain here I know not how long; but long enough to disapoint us very much. I am told here that the 13, 14 & 15 ILLS regts. have been ordered to Jefferson City; that about 800 of the 14th have already passed this point on their way that the remaining 200 were coming through Tuesday on a train with horses & baggage and that when about 30 miles this side of Rolla a collision occured between that & the train going to Rolla. There is no telegraph and I can gather but litlle information in reqard to the accident. Four men came in yesterday morn from the scene & yesterday PM an engine went out from St Louis to the scene of disaster. How many were Killed & wounded I know not. They are now looking for
