Description Tableau 14 in atlas: Illustrations to Maximilian, Prince of Wied's Travels in the interior of North America. Portrait of Mato-Tope, with emphasis on his accomplishments in battle.  His headdress consists of 6 sticks that are symbols of war wounds, coup feathers, and a large turkey feather that represents an injury from an arrow.  The owl feather cluster mens he is a member of the prestigious Dog Society.  The stripes on his right arm commemorate feats of war, and the yellow hand painted on his chest signifies that he captured prisioners. In 1836 Maximilian commissioned Bodmer to create illustrations to accompany the text of his atlas documenting their travels.  These illustrations include 81 plates of aquatints.
