Portraits of a Missouri Indian, Oto Indian, and Chief of the Puncas.  The Puca Chief, named Schuh-De-Ga-Che or "He-Who-Smokes", is wearing a large peace medal on a string with the image of U.S. President James Madison. The Oto Indian is wearing a small padlock attached to a beaded necklace.  The Missouri Indian named Mahinkacka or "Maker of Knives" is wearing a choker and earrings of "wampum" beads and a commercial or trade blanket.  The other men are wearing traditional buffalo-hide skins. In 1836 Maximilian commissioned Bodmer to create illustrations to accompany the text of his atlas documenting their travels.  These illustrations include 81 plates of aquatints.
