Physical Description: 179 photographic prints (4 boxes) ; 24 x 32 cm. or smaller.
Summary: Collection of photographs of Yosemite National Park and of landscapes and native Americans along the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, ca. 1880-ca. 1925. Many of the seventy-one gelatin photographic views of sites in Yosemite, taken after the construction of the Glacier Point Hotel in 1917, include tourists traveling in both Yosemite Transportation System vehicles and private cars. Among the remainder of the photographs (gelatin, albumen, cyanotype) are scenes taken mainly in North Dakota and Montana, but also in Iowa and Oregon. Included are a number of images of Mandan Indians and their dwellings, schools, graves, transport, etc., taken at or near the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota; shots of the Lewis and Clark journals and the sewing kit of expedition member George Shannon; and views of the Crook battlefield, near Rosebud, Mont., and of the dedication of the Floyd Obelisk near Sioux City, Iowa, on May 31, 1901. A number of these images were used by Wheeler in his The Trail of Lewis and Clark. Also a studio portrait of Wheeler and views of him in his Northern Pacific Railway office.
