Summary
Outgoing correspondence of George Galphin to Benjamin Lincoln written from Dec. 15, 1778 to Jan. 9, 1780. While serving as commissioner of Indian affairs, Galphin occasionally wrote to Benjamin Lincoln, commander of the American army in the Southern department. The purpose of Galphin's four letters was to inform Lincoln of the current situation with the Creek Indians and his efforts to maintain their friendship. The correspondence also refers to the importance of the French and Spanish presence in the region. The collection includes three Talks (two by Creek King Tallassee and one by Galphin) which report on the conferences held at Ogeechee where Galphin met with the Creek leaders.
Biographical/Historical Note
George Galphin, Indian trader and Revolutionary patriot, established a trading house in 1739 at Silver Bluff, S.C. on the Savannah River near Augusta, Ga. Galphin, a Scotsman, engaged in the Indian trade at this location, primarily with the Creek Indians, until his death in 1780. At the outbreak of the Revolution, Galphin sympathized with the colonists and was appointed commissioner of Indian affairs for the Southern District in 1775. In the early years of the war, Galphin successfully used his influence and goods to encourage the Creeks to remain anti-British during the conflict.
