Mansfield's response of Jan. 29 1812 is in the Edward E. Ayer Collection at the Newberry Library (Ayer MS 561) 
Summary January 14, 1812, letter to Jared Mansfield, surveyor-general of the United States, 1803-1812, who was then engaged in the survey of Ohio and the Northwest Territory, requesting an opportunity to join the surveying team despite Indian dangers. Larwill also notes that the recent Battle of Tippecanoe should deter Indian aggression. 
Biographical/Historical Note Ohio resident; first lieutenant in the U.S. Second Artillery and Corps of Artillery, Mar. 12, 1812-July 29, 1814; later involved in politics, railroads, and merchandising in Ohio.
