Summary July 19, 1862, letter from Carruth and Martin to William G. Coffin, superintendent of Indian affairs, Southern Superintendency, reporting on the July 15 arrest at Tahlequah of John Ross and his family by a detachment of the expedition and that action's ramifications for loyal Cherokees there. The agents confirm that Ross was compelled to join with the Confederacy to avert a civil war among his people. They also warn that the expedition's retreat has left unionist Cherokees in danger of certain reprisals by rebel Cherokee forces.

Biographical/Historical Note In the summer of 1862, E.H. Carruth, Wichita Agency Indian agent, 1862-1864, and H.W. Martin, special Indian agent and later agent at the Sac and Fox Agency, 1862-1867, were appointed to accompany the U.S. Indian Expedition into Confederate-held Indian Territory. One objective of this military mission was to test the union sympathies of Cherokee chief John Ross, who was believed to have allied his tribe with the Confederacy under duress.
