Summary
Correspondence, 1906-1907, with William Holland Samson (Rochester journalist and historian particularly interested in western New York and its Indian tribes) and Charles Van Voorhis, providing details regarding the Cayuga claim against the state of New York to and for Samson in hopes that he would support the Cayuga case editorially.
Biographical/Historical Note
Rochester, N.Y., attorney who together with the firm of John Van Voorhis' Sons (Charles and Eugene Van Voorhis) represented the Cayuga Nation in their claims against the state of New York. In 1906, the attorneys filed a memorial to the state which was heard by the Commissioners of the Land Office, asking that cash profits realized by the state on sale of Cayuga land cessions dating from the treaty of 1789 be paid to the Nation, or that the state's indebtedness to the tribe be acknowledged.
