Summary July 27, 1724, letter from Gov. Dummer to Col. Edmund Goffe, the commander of forces on the "western frontier" between Salisbury and Brookfield, containing instructions concerning the selection and placement of troops. Goffe is instructed to make sure the forces in the towns are effective and well armed, and to place scouting parties in the woods between the Connecticut and Merrimack Rivers.  He is also empowered when necessary to assemble sufficient forces to repel the enemy, but is cautioned to protect the towns at all times. 
Biographical/Historical Note A native of Massachusetts, William Dummer acted as governor and commander in chief of Massachusetts Bay from the departure of Samuel Shute in 1723 to the arrival of William Burnett in 1728. He conducted Dummer's War (which his predecessor had declared in 1722 against the Abenaki Indians of Maine) mainly on Massachusetts' northern and western frontiers.
