Summary
Letter written by Henry Gaither on June 14, 1793 to an unknown correspondent. While serving at Fort Fidius (Ga.), Gaither writes to a military official, likely in Washington, D.C., informing him of current government relations with Indians in Georgia. In this letter, Gaither describes how General John Twiggs with 600 militia soldiers marched against the Indians "killing the peaceble Indians and burning their Towns."
Biographical/Historical Note
Henry Gaither, military officer, was born in Montgomery County, Md. in 1751. Gaither served as a captain during the Revolutionary War and was commissioned a major in 1791. He commanded various frontier posts in the 1790's. Gaither was honorably discharged from the army in 1802 and returned to Maryland where he died in 1811.
