Summary Letter written by Benjamin Fishbourne on June 27, 1787 to an unknown correspondent. While a member of the Georgia Assembly convening in the state capital of Augusta, Fishbourne writes to a colleague regarding a variety of political and governmental matters. The letter includes discussion of current tensions with the Indians as communicated by his associate Timothy Barnard and their preparation for war "to commence abt. the time [of] the gathering of the Corn." He further informs his colleague that the militia has been ordered to immediately prepare for war. There is also mention of Fishbourne's disapproval of the recent election of Thomas Gibbons as a member of the Assembly representing Chatham County.
Biographical/Historical Note Colonel Benjamin Fishbourne commanded the Fourth Pennsylvania Regiment during the Revolution and served as aide-de-camp to General Anthony Wayne. He later settled in Savannah, Georgia in 1780 where he became involved in state politics. Fishbourne was elected several times to the Georgia Assembly and held other minor political posts.
