Summary Diary kept in the fall of 1876 by Lemuel Burke at the Fort Belknap Agency, established in 1873 north of the Missouri River in the Montana Territory, discontinued in 1876, and reestablished in 1878. Entries describe councils and meetings with representatives of the Gros Ventres and Assiniboine tribes who did not wish to relocate or be supplied from the Fort Peck Agency and who were concerned about liquor sales, the depletion of game by half-breeds, and other problems.  Included are reports of communications between Fort Peck, Jeauneux, and other posts tracking the movements of Indians (including hostile Sioux rumored to be in the area) and others; a military investigation of fort traders selling arms to the Indians; the murder of a young Gros Ventres in a liquor-induced brawl; the decision to close the Fort Belknap Agency, and the transfer of its supplies to Fort Peck.  There is also an inventory of goods remaining at Fort Belknap.
