Summary Two letters, Nov. 8, 1929, and Dec. 16, 1931, from E.J. Pond to H.M. Hitchcock, regarding the Mdewakanton Sioux families of Charles Alexander Eastman and Big Thunder, and their contact with Samuel and Gideon Pond. Eastman family members noted include Cloudman, Cloudman's daughter who married the army artist, Seth Eastman, and Mary Nancy Eastman.  Also discussed are Big Thunder, Little Crow (son), and the untimely deaths of Big Thunder's other children. 
Biographical/Historical Note Son of Minnesota Sioux missionary and Presbyterian minister, Samuel William Pond. From 1834 to 1853 Samuel Pond and his brother, Gideon, ministered to and taught the Sioux, first at Lake Calhoun, and later at Oak Grove (Gideon) and Shakopee (Samuel).  Both remained at their missions following the Sioux removal to reservations and formed congregations among families settling the ceded lands.
