Summary Letter from James M. McNulty to Brig. Gen. W.A. Hammond, then U.S. surgeon general, complying with Hammond's July 27, 1863, request that McNulty send his history on the genesis of the California Column and its 1,000 mile march from California, across Arizona and New Mexico, to the Rio Grande, Apr. 13-Aug. 8, 1862. Included in the narrative are lengthy excerpts from the journals of Lt. Col. Joseph R. West (California desert between Camp Wright and Fort Yuma; Fort Yuma to Tucson); Lieut. John B. Shinn (alternate route, Pima villages to Tucson); and Col. Edward E. Eyre (Tucson to the Rio Grande).  All contain information on roads, terrain, forage, and water supply; in addition Eyre describes encounters with the Apaches and the advance troops' arrival at the Rio Grande, July 4, 1862.  Also recorded in full are Col. (later Brig. Gen.) James H. Carleton's June 29, 1862, proclamation creating the Arizona Territory; July 20, 1862, general order re the march from Tucson to the Rio Grande; and Aug. 14, 1862, general order issued on his assumption of command of the Department of New Mexico.  Attached to the final page is a printed Sept. 21, 1862, general order also issued by Carleton, commending the conduct of the men of the California Column.
Biographical/Historical Note Army surgeon. Originally from New York, McNulty enlisted from California in Aug., 1861, as a surgeon in the 1st California Infantry and participated in the California Column's expedition to New Mexico.  On Feb. 14, 1863, he became surgeon to the U.S. Volunteers and medical director of the Department of New Mexico.
