Summary February 8, 1639, letter from Ludlow to fur trader, magistrate, and Springfield, Mass., founder (1636) William Pynchon, who controlled the upper Connecticut River fur trade from his location at the head of deep-water navigation on the river. Writing at the request of the Indians "that are above you," Ludlow complains about restraints Pynchon has placed on the fur trade. 
Biographical/Historical Note Massachusetts and Connecticut magistrate. A founder of Dorchester, Mass., Ludlow was active in the early government of the Massachusetts Bay colony, serving as deputy-governor in 1634.  In 1635 Ludlow joined colonists making settlements on the Connecticut River, presided at Windsor in 1636 over the first court held in Connecticut, and in 1638/39 is believed to have drafted the Fundamental Orders of the new colony.
