Summary Legal documents regarding the prosecution of the claim of Carver heirs Moses and Henry Gunn of Montague, Hampshire County, Mass., to a portion of the Carver land grant. Included are a ca. 1800 copy of the original land grant, and agreements and bonds, 1805-1807, outlining the responsibilities of Samuel Peters, a Connecticut clergyman turned speculator, and Samuel Harrison of Vermont, agent for the Carver heirs, in obtaining ratification of the claim with the U.S. Congress and the Sioux Indians.  Also specified are the portions of the grant each party would receive.
Biographical/Historical Note Jonathan Carver heir and claimant, along with relatives and others, to a huge tract of land in Wisconsin and Minnesota supposed to have been granted to Carver by the Naudowessie or Western Sioux at the great cave of the upper Mississippi, May 1, 1767. The original grant has never been located, although a 1775 copy in Carver's hand is extant, and was not made public until a year after his death, when it was mentioned in John Coakley Lettsom's introduction to the 1781 edition of the Travels. Extensive efforts by agents of the Carver heirs and speculators to legitimize and profit from the grant came to naught when the U.S. Congress denied its validity in 1825.
