Summary Voucher No. 3, first quarter 1859, documents a financial transaction between Indian Agent Carson and dry goods trader Theodore Mignault. One of Carson's responsibilities included purchasing basic provisions for the Indians under his authority.  Dated March 14, 1859, this document describes the purchase of thirty-six fanegas of wheat (about 58 bushels) in Costilla, N.M., a trading point on the Colorado border forty miles north of Taos.  The voucher records the amount purchased and total cost, the signatures of Carson and Mignault verifying amount paid in full, and the endorsement of J.L. Collins, the Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Santa Fe, N.M.
Biographical/Historical Note Frontiersman, scout, and Indian agent, Christopher Houston Carson, commonly known as Kit Carson, established his home in Taos, N.M. in the mid-1830's. Following years of fur trapping, guiding Fremont's expeditions, and fighting in Indian battles, Carson was appointed U.S. Indian Agent on Jan. 9, 1854 for the tribes occupying the northern area of the New Mexico Territory.  With home and office in Taos, he rendered excellent service until May 1861 when he resigned from the Agency with the outbreak of the Civil War.  Although he could sign his name and title, he remained illiterate during his tenure and delegated the preparation of reports to others.
