Summary Typescript copy of Henry Standage's diary documenting his service with the Mormon Battalion, beginning in Council Bluffs, July 19, 1846, and ending in Los Angeles, July 16, 1847. Diary contains information on miles travelled; towns en route; sickneses, deaths, and burials; shortages of water, provisions, and clothing; buffalo and other game; Indians; military drills, etc. There are also brief descriptions of Santa Fe, Tucson, San Diego, Los Angeles, and the California missions.

Biographical/Historical Note Private in Company E of the Mormon Battalion. Born in England, Standage emigrated to America in 1835, came to Utah in 1847, and died in Mesa, Arizona in 1899. Standage was one of 549 soldiers who in 1846 enlisted in the U.S. army from the Mormon emigration camps at Council Bluffs in the Iowa Territory. The battalion marched from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to California by way of Santa Fe and the Gila River. Released from service in California, Standage and many other volunteers joined Brigham Young's Mormon company and arrived in Utah in October, 1847.
