Creator United States. War Department

Description Forms part of the Edward E. Ayer Manuscript Collection (Newberry Library)

Summary Two letters, Mar. 27 and Oct. 5, 1818, from the secretary of war, John C. Calhoun, to William Clark, governor of the Missouri Territory, and to Jasper Parish, Indian agent, concerning fur trade regulations and the limits of the Indian appropriation. The Clark letter quotes Calhoun's Mar. 25, 1818, letter to Lewis Cass, governor of the Michigan Territory, concerning the President's exercise of his right, according to an 1816 act forbidding foreign fur traders, to permit the use of foreign boatmen and interpreters.  The Parish letter concerns the War Department's inability to pay the expenses of chiefs (probably Seneca) visiting Washington and the activities of "Hyde" (probably Jabez Backus Hyde), a missionary and teacher to the Seneca.
