Summary November 19, 1800, letter from the secretary of war, Samuel Dexter, concerning the mission of John Peter Brown, a Chickasaw Indian who was returning to Knoxville from the capital bearing this letter to David Henley, agent of the War Dept. Brown had travelled alone to Washington after his interpreter fell ill, and he had lost his official papers. Dexter and the president, with whom Brown had an audience, were unable to comprehend Brown's message except for the repetition of the phrase, Captain Bowles. Thinking Brown might have news of the adventurer, William Augustus Bowles, the secretary instructed Henley to obtain a translation of the message and forward it to him.
