Description
Tableau 18 in atlas: Illustrations to Maximilian, Prince of Wied's Travels in the interior of North America. Depiction of a ceremony of the Buffalo Bull Society of the Mandan Indians. Members are wearing headdress of bison hide with attached horns. Two members are wearing full bison head masks. Others wear bulls tails, cloth tails and carry lances or curved wands. In 1836 Maximilian commissioned Bodmer to create illustrations to accompany the text of his atlas documenting their travels. These illustrations include 81 plates of aquatints.
