My dear Mr Pilling.
The enclosed was given me by E. E. Hale at the Boston meeting of the Am. Ant. Soc. in April. It is said to be the Lord's prayer as it appears in Eliot's Indian Bible. Some say that it is a dialect understandable by divers tribes now. Is this the fact? Who can tell so well as you? The Bible Soc. would reprint Eliot if it would prove intelligible to contemporary aborigines. Tell me.
I roved about 5 months and am just home. Will soon send you Sergeant Floyd's Journal in 1804 with Lewis and Clark.
Am glad you liked my review of [[Cones?]].
Regardfully
James D. Butler
