Summary The Mission Play was published by John S. McGroarty in 1911. A gift to Edward E. Ayer in 1924, this copy of the play is marked as an "acting version."  In the three-act drama, McGroarty provides an account of the establishment of the Franciscan missions in southern California, their effect on the Indian populations, and their subsequent decline. 
Biographical/Historical Note John Steven McGroarty, author and congressman, settled in Los Angeles in 1901. McGroarty published numerous works about California's early history including The Mission Play.  Later he served in the House of Representatives (1935-1939).  McGroarty died in California in 1944.
