Summary
Family papers of the Lauzanne family of Auvergne, with additional materials from the allied families of Soubrany de Benistant, Fretat, Genestet de Saint-Didier, D'Anglard de Rochegude, and Pellissier, dated between 1561 and 1972. The bulk of the papers pertain to the noble Lauzanne family, and the allied family of Soubrany, of Italian origin. At the beginning of the XVI century, the bourgeois Soubrany family settled in Riom, France, and over the centuries, traditionally held numerous judicial positions, and served as counselors to the Presidial of Riom. Through the marriage in 1636 of Amable Soubrany and Gilberte de Loberie, the fiefs of Benistant (Varennes-sur-Morge) and Clerlande passed to the Soubrany family. A second branch, the Verrieres, held the fief of Charbonnieres-les-Varennes. Family events and business and land transactions of these families and their estates--especially Clerlande and Bonnabaud--are documented by letters (many with original red wax signet seal of sender), birth certificates, marriage contracts, marriage invitations, death notices, wills, litigation documents concerning matters of inheritance and succession, patents of nobility, account books, receipts, deeds, "terriers" or court rolls of land holdings and their respective tenant farmers, property maps, indulgences, architectural blueprints, watercolor sketches of chateau facades, and even a few photographs from the 1950s and 1960s. Many of the vellum documents are marriage and land contracts from the 16th and 17th centuries, and there is also a large group of papers from the time of the French Revolution. In fact, one of the Soubranys, Pierre-Auguste de Soubrany (1752-1795), despite his noble birth and considerable fortune, was an early supporter of the Revolution, who, as a member of the Assembly representing Puy-de-Dome, voted in favor of the execution of the king. Although he served courageously in the Moselle and Pyrenees campaigns in 1793 and 1794, he was implicated in the Prairial insurrection of June 1795 by his friend Romme, relieved of his military command, and executed. Also included are numerous genealogical research reports made by various family members--some including modern transcriptions of ancient documents--and several printed genealogies, such as Rene Bouscayrol's Origines familiales et sociales de Romme et de Soubrany (Riom, 1965), and Hugues de Lauzanne's Genealogie de la maison de Lauzanne (Moulins, 1924).
