Summary Nine ms. "bails" or leases, dated between July 2, 1593 and Nov. 2, 1757, for flour mills in Bessé-sur-Braye (called "Bessé-sur-le-Loir" in the mss.), in the parish of Lunay. Most of the documents are leases for flour mills in Bessé, owned by the Taillevis family, seigneurs de Mézière, beginning with the earliest lease, dated July 2, 1593, to Robert Girard.  François René de Taillevis is mentioned in particular in leases to Simon Boucheron, miller, and his wife, Jeanne David (lease dated Sept. 20, 1746); René Chastein (lease dated July 1, 1749); and Vincent Dorré (lease dated July 15, 1755). The leases contain a description of the property, duration of lease, amount of rent, dates of payment of rent, and the portion of milled grain allowed the tenant.  The document dated Nov. 2, 1757 is an appraisal of the value of the millstones, wooden axles, iron hardware, and furnishings of two mills in Bessé, agreed upon by the outgoing tenant, Vincent Dorré, and the new tenant, Léonard Souriau.  Many documents are signed by notary Etienne Guettier; other notaries include Jean Garreau (Aug. 7, 1727), and Jacques Frouard (Sept. 20, 1746 and July 21, 1722). Four leases were executed before the bailiff of the duchy of Vendomois, Joseph-Charles de Vimeur, marquis de Rochambeau.
