Summary Correspondence, writings, photographs, and miscellaneous material that Oliver Barrett kept which pertained to his relationship with Carl Sandburg, plus items added by Barrett's son, Roger. Letters (1925-1949) between Barrett and Sandburg deal mainly with their mutual interest in Abraham Lincoln and the books and projects Sandburg was working on, but also concern other personal, legal, literary, and historical matters. There is also correspondence between Roger Barrett and Herbert Mitgang, and others. There are a number of notes from Sandburg that apparently accompanied manuscripts he sent to Barrett, such as articles, a section of his one novel, Remembrance rock, drafts of portions of his Lincoln biography, and many poems. The photograph collection consists of over 600 stereographs - many of Civil War scenes and views of Chicago before and after the 1871 fire - apparently collected by both Sandburg and Barrett; over 100 cabinet photographs and a few cartes de visite of prominent 19th century literary figures, military officers, politicians, and actors. Also photographs of Sandburg and Barrett, and miscellaneous printed material including newspaper clippings, publicity broadsheets, and a few magazines containing Sandburg poems.
