Biographical/Historical Note The Santee Normal Training School was founded in Santee, Nebraska, in 1870 by Alfred L. Riggs, a Congregational missionary. The purpose of the boarding school was to provide training and education to the members of the Santee Sioux Tribe who had been exiled from their home in Minnesota following the Sioux uprising of 1862. The institution closed in 1936 as a result of financial difficulties and a loss of government subsidies.
