Summary Copies of documents, summaries of proceedings, and additional commentary, probably compiled around 1740, relating to the mediation of land disputes between Connecticut and the Mohegan Indians. Included are a petition of Mahomet to George II (1736); a report of the Board of Trade regarding the petition (June 10, 1736); the appointment of a commission of review (June 3, 1737); an abstract of the proceedings of the review commission held in Greenwich, Conn. (May-June, 1738); a report of the the disputing Greenwich commissioners to the Lords of Trade (Nov. 20, 1738); depositions of various individuals (1739), and an address by Ben Uncas to George II (May 4, 1739).  Subject matter includes a history of land transactions dating from the 1640's and the disputed tribal succession.
Biographical/Historical Note From 1704 to 1743 Great Britain at various times appointed commissioners to resolve an ongoing dispute between the Mohegan Indians and the colony of Connecticut, over lands that the Mohegans claimed had been taken from them unjustly.  This dispute was complicated by conflicts over the rightful succession to tribal leadership between Ben Uncas and Mahomet, and later Ben Uncas and John Uncas.
