Townsend; correspondence and a journal written by Davis and his wife, describing the Russian cession ceremony, Sitka, daily life, and trips to tribal settlements, 1867-1870; an 1872 explanation of Davis' treaty-mandated takeover of Russian Fur Company property; correspondence from Robert N. Scott, a senior aide of Halleck's in San Francisco, commenting on military appointments, congressional funding, presidential impeachment proceedings, and Davis' handling of an 1869 incident involving a Chilkat chief; a copy of the first issue of the Sitka times (issued in ms., Sept. 19, 1868); and photographs (Metropolitan Veniaminov, Sir John Franklin, Prince Maksutov, etc.), engravings, and administrative correspondence. Mexican-related items include Mrs. Davis' 1878 diary containing detailed descriptions of an Ohio and Mississippi River steamboat passage, New Orleans, and Mexico City; and signed photographs of President and Mrs. Porfirio Diaz, whom the Davis' visited.

User-Contributed Transcription Indorsements on communication from Wm H Wood dated Sitka, Alaska November 22nd 1871, to the Secretary of War. - states that in 1868, Major General Davis Comd'g the then Department of Alaska seized and occupied a Building (No 5) belonging to him and that the same is still occupied. - The building is going to ruin, without an effort to repair it, and he (Wm H Wood) is deprived the right of ownership. - By reference to Inventory "D" attached to the protocol of transfer will prove that the Commissioners of transfer recognized this as private property-States that as he purchased the property in good faith, and the Com'g Gen'l failed to warn of a danger, and that he claimed the property as belonging to Government; while he knew that the citizens were purchasing houses at the time, and believing that the Government does not desire to strip one of its citizens and render him homeless without compensation, he therefore encloses a bill for the rent of said house. viz: Sitka Alaska Nov: 22. 1871.The United States To Wm H Wood Dr 1871.
