Summary Handwritten summary of a petition presented to King Philip II of Spain by Juan Velázquez de Salazar, attorney-general for New Spain, concerning the order of succession to the ownership of the Indian slaves, distributed by the king as favors to the Spanish conquistadores who settled in Nueva Galicia, an important province of New Spain. Velázquez discusses how various royal cédulas have changed the laws governing inheritance of slave ownership over the past 50 years, and concludes by asking the king to rule that succession be perpetual, passing upon the death of a slave owner to his eldest legitimate son or daughter or, should he die without heirs, to his wife.  Marginal notes in the abstract give the dates of various relevant cédulas issued between 1528 and 1561, used as precedents. The abstract indicates that the original document, signed in Madrid in 1578 by Guillermo Drouy, also includes the text of Velázquez's case and precedents, the decision to grant the petition for perpetual rights of succession, excerpts from related letters, a table of cédulas quoted, and a detailed index of legal references.
