Summary Waldeck's transcription of his notes on his travels and research in Palenque and the Yucatán between 1832 and 1836 (some of which may also be found in his Journal No. 24), with some changes, additions, and deletions. Waldeck describes the architecture and construction of Mayan structures at Palenque--temples, palaces, towers, houses, and pyramids--analyzing their relief sculptures, medallions, niches, and large figures.  Throughout the notes he reflects on the origin and nature of the Mayan civilization, and refers to related drawings by including the corresponding plate numbers.  There is also an inventory of drawings he completed after he left Mexico in 1837, and a chapter on natural history, dealing with the physical aspects of the Indians and with the animals and insects he encounters.  Waldeck includes population charts, glossaries, and newspaper clippings.  The final section, dated 1837, in Paris, contains an explanation of a manuscript from the University of Mexico on the migration of the Mexican Indians; notes on the similarities between ancient Mexican art and mythology and that of Egypt and Babylonia; and comments of Sept. 23, 1853 on a visit with J.L. Stephens, author of Incidents of travel in the Yucatán, and engraver Frederick Catherwood.
