Description Title and date suggested by added ms. note on front endpaper (which also erroneously attributes the volume to [bookseller] Thomas Thorp): "Original water-color sketches of the costume of North American & South American figures. 55 sketches. Ca. 1850. By Thomas Thorp."
Fifteen sketches signed by Charles Ede; three by "S.T."; one by "Chase"; one by H.L. Donnet; one by "I.T.H."; and one signed "J. Lane" [?].
Leaves 23-36 are blank, with the exception of the verso of leaf 29, which contains a landscape in pencil, signed "J.R.L." [?]
Heavy gray paper covers, half-bound in cordovan leather; gold-ruled spine.
Stationer's ticket on inside front cover of G. Leuzinger of Rio de Janeiro.
Acquired in 1942 from British bookseller Thomas Thorp of Guildford, England.
Forms part of the Edward E. Ayer Manuscript Collection (Newberry Library) 
Summary Album of watercolor drawings from about 1850 by several artists, but principally by Charles Ede, illustrating the native dress of peoples of North and South America. The drawings depict small groups of two or three people of various social classes, in different countries, engaged in typical activities, such as black slaves, a Brazilian woman, and a priest from Rio de Janeiro; Mexican Indians, grinding corn, and carrying baggage; Chileans; "limeƱos" from Lima, including criollo dancers, cockfighters, and sea bathers at Callao; native people of the Sandwich Isles, including women in their riding dress; and natives of the Society Islands and Vancouver Island, the latter spinning, and carrying a papoose.  A portrait, "Frisi, chief of the Songes of Vancouvers Isle", is signed I.T.H.
